Chaplain

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Chaplain is appointed by and reports directly to the President of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. The Chaplain will work closely with the office of Enrollment and Student Success for internal mission and the Office of Advancement for external relations. The Chaplain is charged with providing support, pastoral care, and guidance to LPTS students, non-instructional staff, and faculty. The Chaplain is expected to support effort to build a positive, safe, hospitable, and just campus community. The Chaplain will assist students, faculty and staff with the weekly chapel services on Wednesdays and Thursdays during the academic year. The external mission of the office of the Chaplain is to steward relationships with congregations and denominational partners, promote ecumenical, interfaith, and community relations, on and beyond the campus, and to champion the overall efforts of LPTS to share the “Whosoever” vision with prospective students, stakeholders and alums.

Anticipated start – As soon as possible.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide pastoral care and community support to the LPTS students, non-instructional staff, and faculty:

  • Engage students in the exploration of wholistic health, values, faith, spiritual practices, and discernment of vocational call
  • Provide confidential spiritual guidance to students, staff, and faculty
  • Participate in campus activities and community events to build community and connections
  • Support weekly Wednesday and Thursday chapel worship services led by student chapel ministers, faculty and staff

Steward relationships with congregations and denominational partners, promote ecumenical, interfaith, and community relations, on and beyond the campus, and to champion the overall efforts of LPTS to share the “Whosoever” vision with prospective students, stakeholders and alums.

  • Serve as an ambassador for LPTS and as an active participant in the work of the local congregations
  • Build relationships between LPTS and denominational partners
  • Serve in a “guest preacher” role throughout the region as a representative of LPTS
  • Assist and promote increased community participation at weekly LPTS chapel services
  • Partner with the President and Office of Advancement to meet LPTS advancement objectives, including the annual fund, student scholarships, facility construction and renovation, and endowment growth

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Divinity required; terminal degree preferred
  • Previous experience in working as a chaplain is preferred
  • Board Certification preferred
  • Have a minimum of three years of experience working in higher education and/or possess and demonstrate transferrable skills and experience
  • Dedication to the mission of LPTS
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to the WHOSOEVER ethos
  • Experience with fundraising, advancement or stewardship preferred
  • Strong preaching and public speaking skills preferred
  • Experience providing pastoral care, mental health support, or spiritual direction preferred
  • Work independently yet collaboratively, provide attention to detail, balance multiple projects, and meet deadlines successfully
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and administrative skills
  • Expectation of travel (1-2) Sundays each month

COMPENSATION:

Full-time, exempt position offering a full range of benefits, including 403B pension benefit, and health insurance.
