Renowned Scottish hymn writer John Bell to lead worship March 4-5 2/8/2010
John Bell, internationally-recognized hymn writer and worship consultant, is coming to Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary to work with theological students in how to shape worship that encourages collective and enthusiastic participation and speaks to the contexts of people in the world today.
In addition to this educational component, Bell will lead two worship services and a special evening service of song, called “Why Do God’s People Sing?” The public is invited to attend all three services, which will be held in the Frank H. and Fannie W. Caldwell Chapel on the campus of Louisville Seminary.
Schedule
March 4 – 11:30 a.m., Worship
March 4 – 7:30 p.m., “Why Do God’s People Sing?”
March 5 – 11:30 a.m., Improvisational Worship, planned with the Louisville Seminary Chapel Ministers.
"Everybody who has a voice of any kind" is invited to participate in the evening service, according to Bell, whose ministry with the Wild Goose Resource Group of the Iona Community in Scotland, is “primarily concerned with the renewal of congregational worship at grass roots level.”
The Rev. John L. Bell is an ordained minister of the Church of Scotland and a member of the Iona Community, where he develops resources in the areas of music and worship with the Wild Goose Resource Group. He is a past convener of the Church of Scotland’s Panel on Worship and presently convenes the Committee revising the Church Hymnary. Bell has produced many collections of original hymns and songs and two collections of songs of the world church. He is an occasional broadcaster and lectures in theological colleges in Britain and North America. In 1999, he was honored with a Fellowship by the Presbyterian Church of Canada and the Royal School of Church Music, and in 2002, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Glasgow.
This special event with John Bell is being coordinated by the Chapel Ministries Program of Louisville Seminary, under the direction of Rev. Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes, Assistant Professor of Worship and Preaching. It is being held in conjunction with the Spring Exploratory Weekend, March 5-6. Exploratory Weekends are scheduled two times each year, March and October, for individuals who would like to explore the Louisville Seminary experience as part of their discernment process regarding theological education and a call to ministry. Online registration is available.
