The Academic
Support Center (ASC) was started in the Fall of 2000 with
monies provided from a grant from the Luce Foundation.
ASC assists
students, faculty and staff with the various aspects of academic
writing, critical analysis, study skills, and reading. We
can also assist with professional papers, resumes, and reports.
Throughout the semester, ASC conducts workshops
including ones on organization, documentation styles, plagiarism,
senior Statements of faith, the CHATS Statement of Faith paper,
and the Ordination Exams.
The
service is free.
Current Status of Center
For each of the last three years more than 300 students have
visited our Center for assistance. Considering our full time
student population is around 120, the Center works with most
students and some students on a weekly basis. We often attend
classes and conduct “mini” workshops—usually
on plagiarism or documentation issues. We also offer workshops
throughout the year such as “Learning to Critically
Analyze,” “Reading Smarter,” “Test
Anxiety”, “Study Skills,” and APA and Chicago
documentation styles. At the request of several professors,
the Center has developed workshops for specific assignments
such as the Statement of Faith paper. A 30-page workbook has
been developed for Presbyterian students taking Ordination
exams and several “ORDS Prep” workshops are offered
each year. Every incoming student is tested in both reading
and writing and has an individual conference to discuss the
strengths and any weakness in their reading and writing. Between
working with students individually, conducting workshops,
and visiting classes the Center is in individual contact with
at least 90% of the school population each semester.
