Description

The Master of Theology (Th.M.) degree program is for pastors and other Master of Divinity graduates who wish to study at an advanced level: Bible, Theology, Church History, or one or more areas of ministry. The student's goal is to gain mastery of resources in one of the theological disciplines. This course of study is frequently undertaken by persons who are considering future doctoral work. The Th.M. program requires a full year of study, arranged with an assigned Faculty Advisor, according to the expressed desires of the student. A plan of study is arranged for the student at the time of matriculation, and it may be changed only with the written permission of the Faculty Advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies. With the permission of the Faculty Advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies, a student may engage in Th.M. study for longer than one year.

CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION

Admission

For the student to be eligible to begin study during a fall semester, the completed application must be received by June 15 of that year. The Graduate Studies Committee of the Faculty is responsible for admitting students. Applicants must have at least a B average in previous theological courses.

Requirements for the Degree

At least 30 hours of study shall be completed for the Th.M., of which at least 15 shall be at the post-M.Div. level. Language requirements shall be determined in each individual case by the Faculty Advisor and the Dean of the Seminary according to the field of specialization and its needs, ordinarily comprising facility in one biblical and one modern language. Ordinarily, a thesis will be required, for which up to six credits may be earned. An oral examination in the area of concentration, given by the Faculty Advisor and one other Faculty member familiar with the work of the student, also will be required at the completion of study.

A student in the Th.M. program must maintain at least a B average to continue this course of study.

Resources

For a student to be accepted in the Th.M. program, the Graduate Studies Committee of the Faculty must be satisfied that sufficient resources exist for instruction in the area of concentration proposed by the prospective student in the application.
