Academic Programs > Women's Ordination
Conference
Wind
and Flame: Women Claiming Sacred Space is a
celebration of the ordination of women in the Presbyterian
Church: Deacons (100 years), Elders (75 years), and Clergy
(50 years). Whether you belong to the Presbyterian family
or other denominations and faiths, come to listen, speak,
teach, worship, and feast together.
The keynote
address for this event will be presented by The Rev. Dr. Katie
Geneva Cannon, the Annie Scales Rogers Professor of Christian
Ethics at Union Theological
Seminary in Richmond, Virginia.
The first
African-American woman ordained in the United Presbyterian
Church (USA), Cannon focuses her work in the areas of Christian
ethics, Womanist Theology, and women in religion and society.
She has lectured nationally on theological and ethical topics
and is the author or editor of numerous articles and seven
books including Katie’s Canon: Womanism and the Soul
of the Black Community and Black Womanist Ethics. Dr.
Cannon holds degrees from Barber-Scotia College (B.S.), Johnson
C. Smith Seminary (M.Div.), and Union Theological Seminary
in New York (M.Phil, Ph.D.)
Inaugural
Lectureship
Dr.
Cannon will, at the same time, inaugurate the Katie
Geneva Cannon Lectureship, which will become an annual
program of the Women’s Center at Louisville Presbyterian
Theological Seminary. This annual lectureship will be presented
by a woman scholar who belongs to a racial ethnic minority
in the United States and who raises a critical voice against
the dominant oppressive structures and ideologies of the era.
